On to the guest post...!
Magic holds great importance in the world of Erolith. Like many things, it’s an expression of energy. A form of life that strengthens and grows through its user; the more they wield it, the stronger it becomes. This energy cannot be fully contained, nor shall it be destroyed. Though many do not possess the ability to harness its power, it lives through everyone and is manipulated by the choices of their actions.
There are several opposing beliefs when it comes to magical energy, ranging from those who view it as nothing more than obscured, fragmented energy not to be trifled with, to the widely spread notion that it belongs to the Divines themselves.
The belief in the Divines, or the Circle of Six as they’re known by the humans who worship them, has shaped the teachings of the Order of Saro for millennia. Dating back centuries, to the oldest texts that were once kept safely within the Colleges of Styyr, the teachings state that magical energy belongs exclusively to the Divines. Anyone born with magical blood, whether they be human or otherwise, are considered demonic and must therefore be purged.
It is said that long ago, before the texts were written, that Nizotl, the God of Deceit, gifted mortals with a touch of his power. It was then that the mortals grew hungry for more, sending the world into chaos as they slaughtered one another for a taste of power. Their vengeance, anger, lust, and greed tore the world apart. These tales of darkness have laced the teachings with whispers of hatred, casting aside all who possess any semblance of magical energy and sealing their fates with an inescapable demise.
These beliefs still hold true to this day, with High Priest Beinon collecting blood samples of every human born in his country and immediately exterminating those who are found to hold the powers of the Divines.
This annihilation has divided the peoples, as humanity views anyone not born of pure human blood to be impure, and thus, they must be eradicated.
This fracture in society gives way to the second, and most commonly believed notion that magic is nothing more than an expression of energy. Seven realms of pure, undiluted power reside throughout the continent of Laeroth, each holding their own specific form of magic. Only those gifted in the arcane may enter the sacred realms, infusing them with the full strength of its power.
This possession of such vitality and strength has led many non-humans to view sorcerers as not demonic, but sacred. Their position in society is held to a much higher degree as they hold the key to salvation. Those gifted with magic, typically born of First Blood lineage, understand that their power has the force to shift the tides keeping the world in balance.
While the true nature of magic cannot be explained, nor can the truth of the Divines or reason for the Realms, one thing is for certain: magical energy should not be taken lightly. And those who wield it, no matter how pure their intentions, have the power to cast the world into unrelenting darkness and chaos.
